Gordon Ramsay at the London, NYC

As promised, I am sharing more deats from my fabulous fancy birthday dinner in NYC. Not only did Adam surprise me with a weekend in NYC but he also totally surprised me with his restaurant choice- Gordon Ramsay at the London NYC! I’ve been to my fair share of nice restaurants and this one tops the chart. (as it should!)

Fact: I forgot the names of some of our courses. I did some research until I was able to determine exactly what we ate except the dessert portion gets a little tricky.

I’m not a food critic and I typically use words like fabulous, delicious,  and yummy to describe my food. Even if I watch The Food Network daily, I don’t know- if it tastes good that’s really all that matters to me. With that being said I’m just going to give a brief rundown of what we ate that night.

As we entered Maze we were greeted with a very friendly front staff. I’m sure everyone is treated this way, and it’s not because my sister in law’s bestie is employed by Chef Ramsay, right? We had a light discussion on how we knew Peggy as we were escorted through Maze and through some doors until we reached Gordon Ramsay at the London NYC. It reminded me of a private dining room that would be available to rent for an event.  There are only about 15 tables in the restaurant. The white and gold décor with dim lighting gave a very warm and inviting effect. And the chairs were super plush-perfect for a multi-hour long meal!

Shortly after we sat down and handed menus they wheeled over the champagne cart, popped a bottle and poured us two glasses of bubbly- compliments of Peggy! Another totally unexpected surprise!

Our waiter began to explain the menu choices to us, letting us know everything can be customized to our liking. We ordered our respected courses, selected our wine choice and had a toast. Then the food started coming. Oh my gosh, readers- get ready.

First was the amuse bouche which was a chilled cucumber and almond soup with the tiniest pommes gaufrettes. I think I could have ate an entire batch of the waffle fries. They were light and crunchy, so good.

Next was our hors d’oeuvre. It was a deconstructed gazpacho consisting of melons and cucumbers. I remember thinking it was refreshing.

They brought out fresh baked bread and I think sea salt butter. We were really impressed with the butter dish. I sorta want to get one, isn’t it cute?

And then our wine was poured to let it breathe. I don’t remember what type of wine this was, except that the waiter explained it has sort of a “band aid” after taste. Why we chose this one, I don’t know. I think we were intrigued. The wine became better the more it breathed, but after the first sip it really did taste like a band aid was in your mouth.

Then our starters came out. Adam ordered the carpaccio. I had tomato and basil risotto specially made.

I really wanted risotto, the one on the menu had wild mushrooms, I have an allergy- whatcha gonna do? Be that girl, yes ma’am! And I’m so glad I did. I could have happily eaten plate after plate of this creamy goodness!

For our main courses, I selected the filet of turbot with marinated sungold tomatoes, asparagus, and basil velouté. Confession: I didn’t know turbot was a type of fish until after I ordered. My mind was still wrapping around the words “deconstructed gazpacho”- I saw filet, thought it was cow. Ha. Thankfully I still found my dish delightful. It was very flakey and tender. Best piece of fish I ever did eat, I tell ya!

Adam selected the colorado lamp over Moroccan couscous and braised artichokes with a lamb vinaigrette. I did not try any of his meal but he said it was really great. He ended up not really digging the Moroccan couscous but he eat every last bite of lamb.

Being stuffed with wine and food we had to make room for dessert. And this is where things got crazy. First came out what I believe to be a palate cleanser, and sadly I don’t remember what it was. I think it ended up being very similar to the dessert selection Adam choose. I do know it was sorbet, and it was good!

Next came out a berry sorbet with a single candle and Happy Birthday written in chocolate. No singing, or clapping or dancing- just an elegant but understated birthday surprise. It was good.

Then they brought out the desserts we ordered- I picked the chocolate soufflé. It’s something my baking skills cannot master. Mmm, the inside was gooey and warm. It was served with mint ice cream. I’m not a fan of anything mint unless it’s chewing gum. But I scarfed down the ice cream so fast that I didn’t even snap a picture. If all mint flavored treats were that good I’d probably eat more!

Adam’s desert.. hmm. He says it was something peach. It looks similar to our palate cleanser and during my research this morning I read another person who ate here last month received white peach and thyme crumble with peach puree and lemon verbena sorbet. I’m not sure if that’s what Adam had, as I also did not try this dish. Actually, I didn’t try any of Adam’s selections. I kinda regret that!

Okay- so I’m still not done with dessert. I’m sure you’re like “this post is long enough”, believe me I was thinking similar thoughts as more food was brought to us. (though I’m not complaining)

For some reason we received this extra dessert of lemon pudding cake with strawberry meringue topped with champagne sorbet. Every event should have champagne sorbet. I’m just saying.

Our last course was the candy cart. They rolled over this fabulous display of house made candies. Our waiter loaded up a plate filled with cotton candy, marshmallows, honeycombs, salted caramels, truffles and other assorted chocolates. If that’s not enough, they sent us home with little boxes of chocolates too!

After dinner, we were escorted through the kitchen where I was once again completely thrown off my game. The pastry chef for Maze asked “How’s Emitt doing”- Emitt, as in my nephew who was only 4 days old at this time. As it turns out, the chef is Peggy’s sister! It’s a small world.

I absolutely loved this dinner. It was an experience- and probably something I’ll only do once in my lifetime.  My husband is awesome. It was the ultimate birthday dinner!

Woah, July

Wowzers, July was a busy month. I feel like I blinked and it was over! I also feel like I celebrated all-month-long!

My first birthday celebration was with my wonderful Mother and Father-In-law. I definitely lucked out in the “in-law” department because they are super awesome. We had a wonderful steak dinner at Carvers followed by presents and cocktails back at the Pod. Oh man, we laughed so hard!

Bets and Tbear, aren’t they cuties?

Adam’s longest and very best friend got hitched! It was a hot day but no one minded with all the love that was in the air. I mean just look at these two!

The Mr & Mrs right after their ceremony.

Angela and I celebrated our birthday together over our favorite NY Style Bagel sandwiches. Even though her gift did not arrive in time, she didn’t mind just opening a few of her smaller gifts.

Don’t mind Toby, he was hoping to score some of the Better Mades.

Then I became an AUNT! I don’t have many words to say about this as I really didn’t do anything for this event to happen but I can tell you this: I love my nephew so much already and I’m so happy he’s arrived in my life.

Emitt is already stealing hearts, just look at his face!

Made a trip to my favorite bar in the Oregon District, Blind Bob’s, to have some drinks on my birthday. It was low key and exactly how I wanted to spend the evening of my 30th!

Hello ladies!

Then I had a surprise trip to NYC! Tops my chart of weekend getaways. Thanks, baby!

I ended my birthday celebrations with a fabulous girls night out in my home city of Cleveland, aka #30andfab for those on twitter! The evening might have started off with a hiccup (hotel was without ac which meant they were closed causing us to reroute Cupcake and Cocktail hour and sleeping arrangements) but we had a blast anyway!

there were pretty pink flowers..

and awesome custom favors from Pure Enchantment

an amazing assortment of cheeses…

thoughtful (and handmade) gifts…

Stella & Dot

yummy sweets…

dinner at Luxe..

and dancing!

Thank you besties, I’m so lucky to have gals like you in my life!

And if this post isn’t long enough I want to share the LPD goals I crushed this month! If you recall they were:

  1. Finish custom banner. Check!
  2. Finish wedding invite order. Check!
  3. Reopen shop (check!) with at least 5 new designs. Sorta check?

I was only able to list 4 new designs. While I did make 5 designs, one was purchased before I could list it. So it sorta worked out right? In case you haven’t been to my shop in awhile let me show you these beauts!

And this one of a kind that has already been sold:

How was your July?

Big Apple, Big Surprise!

Typically my husband and I have a tradition of taking each other shopping for each other’s birthday.  It’s not as romantic as a surprise gift but we both love the green pass to a shopping spree. This year however, with turning the BIG 3-0, Adam decided to surprise me.

Surprise he did! Not only did I receive a personal blender for work smoothies and two dozen beautiful roses- I received a surprise trip. Now I knew I was going somewhere, but I did not know our location until Friday night at 8pm when he told me I had to go to bed because we were waking up at 2:30am to leave for NYC! I’ve always wanted to visit Long Island and we’ve wanted to take our two-seat convertible to the East coast- I was totally psyched to cross two things off our bucket list! Only having about 34 hours to see the city that never sleeps, we gave our legs a good work out! Here’s a recap of our weekend getaway!

We arrived at our hotel in Chinatown, got settled and ready for the evening. We started off with early cocktails at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel. They had an amazing view that we enjoyed over a few glasses of wine.

Skylines and Ocean views- two scenes I’ll never get sick of viewing!

Next we headed to The London NYC for a fancy schmancy dinner. My husband and I both love Gordon Ramsay so eating at one of his restaurants was definitely a must. I was shocked to find out we weren’t eating at Maze but instead in the small private back room that is Gordon Ramsay at the London. Hands down, this was the most exquisite dinning we’ve ever experienced! I will write more about this later, trust me!

Here we are waiting for dessert.

After dinner we took a walk through Times Square. A bustling area on Saturday night. Even most of the stores were still open; talk about convenience! I wonder how we can get The Greene to keep shops open later here in Dayton, hmm…

Everyone doin’ there thang.

Sunday was “see as much as we can until we collapse” day. I think we walked about 12-15 miles. Wowzers! We started off with a not-so-convenient subway ride down to Battery Park to check out the Statue of Liberty. The line for the ferry was already super long by 9am, so we decided we were cool seeing her from Long Island.

Me and the Lady in the Water

From Battery Park we headed north towards Central Park. We saw many sites, including a few parks, the Empire State building, and cool things like Forbes Magazine. Here are some of the highlights from our walk:

At the National September 11 Memorial Plaza (that is under construction) we took a few minutes to remember that day and said a prayer for those in memory.

We got a hotdog from a street vendor.

Saw one of our all-time favorite buildings, the Flatiron Building.

Looked for platform 9 ¾ Grand Central Station (no dice)

Stopped for a delish lunch at Rosa Mexicano.

Did a little bit of shopping on 5th Avenue.

Around 4:30pm we were beat and took a cab back to our hotel. After a quick nap we got ready for dinner at Mario Batali’s Otto Pizzeria. Very fun atmosphere, extensive wine list, and more yummy Italian dishes than we could choose.

Just a girl and her cosmo. What’s up.

Unfortunately, our waitress was not so great and the girl next to us was a little too drunk so we bolted as soon as we finished our main courses. I still really wanted dessert so we took a walk around Little Italy and stopped for some gelato at Ferrara Bakery.

MMmm.

Monday morning we purchased some breakfast from Time Square Hot Bagels and enjoyed them at a little table on the street. From there we went to check out Rockefeller Center.

Hello 30 Rock!

Our last stop before heading on our way back to Ohio was Magnolia Bakery. Although my cupcakes melted by the time we got home, they were still just as tasty!

I want to bake in a fluffy apron!

I absolutely fell in love with the city and most definitely plan to come back! What an awesome birthday surprise, I love my hubby!
